Individual Tax Checklist
Gather documents relevant to your circumstances. Not every item applies to every taxpayer.

Checklist
- Government-issued identification for taxpayer and spouse
- Social Security Numbers or ITINs for taxpayer, spouse and dependents
- Prior-year federal and state tax returns
- Forms W-2, 1099 and other income statements
- Brokerage statements and digital-asset transaction records where applicable
- Self-employment income and expense records
- Rental-property income, expenses and acquisition/improvement records
- Mortgage interest and property tax records
- Charitable contribution records
- Education, childcare and dependent-related tax documents
- Health savings account and retirement contribution/distribution forms
- Estimated federal and California tax payment confirmations
- IRS or California tax notices received during the year
- Foreign account, foreign asset or foreign income information where applicable
- Records of major life changes such as marriage, divorce, birth, death, home purchase or business start
