IRS & California Tax Notice Checklist
Do not ignore a tax notice. Gather the complete record before responding.

Checklist
- Every page of the notice or letter
- Envelope or date received if timing matters
- Tax year and tax type involved
- Copy of the originally filed return
- Amended returns, if any
- Payment confirmations and canceled checks
- Prior correspondence with the agency
- W-2, 1099, K-1 or other forms relevant to the issue
- Supporting accounting or deduction records
- Power of attorney or authorization documents, if already executed
- Any stated response or petition deadline
